Winner!
Posted: October 22, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized 3 CommentsBack in September I actually won a fabulous prize from My Milk Glass Heart’s 3 Year Blog Anniversary contest. I was entry #1 and the random number generator actually picked that number. I never win anything!
The package arrived the first week of my terrible mystery illness, so I didn’t get a chance to use most of the stuff for a while.
My favorite item is the Ulta makeup bag (full of makeup!). It’s the red bag, which is a neutral color palate. I am really liking the eye liner, mascara, and the eye shadows. I have been getting a lot of use out of this makeup kit!

Ulta Makeup Bag
The next best thing is this beautiful handmade alpaca scarf, which perfectly matches a pink tweed coat I own. It’s not cold enough yet, but I look forward to wearing this.

Probably the weirdest item (that I turned out loving a ton) was a Japanese wash cloth. It’s like a shower poof that isn’t gathered up into a poof shape. This makes it easy to wash your back, or wrap it around your arms/legs and scrub all sides in one go. The material makes a great lather with just a little liquid soap. You can buy your own here on Amazon.
Thanks My Milk Glass Heart (aka Lara)!
Bunny Pictures for October

Posted: October 2, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized 1 CommentSuccessfully made it to the fair yesterday. It was pretty huge and we didn’t get there until 3:30, so we still need to go back hopefully Thursday or Friday night.
Mom borrowed a wheelchair and pushed me around all day because I wouldn’t have had the stamina to walk around on my own. [Still sick, feeling maybe 10% better. Still no diagnosis.]
We didn’t see the livestock up for ribbons, but we did make it to the petting zoo where they also had animals for sale. I ended up impulse-buying a baby bunny.

Domino the Bunny
I bought a cage and a few days’ worth of food from the people selling the bunnies, but had to go to the Tractor Supply Center this morning to get him a water bottle and some more hay.
I’ve decided to name him Domino. He’s supposedly about 2 months old and will about double in size until he weighs approximately 4 pounds. He is a mini rex, which is a breed known for short, velvety fur. He is so soft.
I’m trying to get him used to people. He will cuddle sometimes, but also likes to bite me on the hand and forearm. Bunnies like to chew everything, but I hope he outgrows the biting because the sucker can hurt.
They can be litter box trained, which I want to try to do, but apparently it can take weeks.
State Fair

I scored my family advance “season” passes for just $11 each. It’s normally over $11 just to get in for one day. We have been planning to go this weekend [here’s hoping I feel up to it!].
Funnel cake is out for me, but I am hoping to be able to get some cotton candy and maybe a bit of some ridiculous fried food (thinking maybe Oreo). I’ll probably mainly pack my own snacks though.
I am excited to see adorable baby animals. They have an Australian animal show this year, and there’s the always-popular pig races. I also like seeing all the long-haired rabbits and other cuties up for prizes.
It seems like they will have a farmers market and a lot of vendors, so hopefully I can pick up something yummy. The rides freak me out a little bit (they seem unsafe), but maybe I will get one a few. I’m sure my brother will want to do rides and games, where I will want to eat, shop and look at animals.
NYC
Posted: September 28, 2011 Filed under: Shopping, Travel 2 CommentsEver since I heard Orla Kiely was opening her first US location in NYC I have been planning to make a trip up to check it out. I absolutely love her stuff, even though I’ve only bought two Etc line purses (both on sale) and one mainline bag that my parents kindly splurged on for a Christmas gift. I would love the chance to even just try on the clothing, even though that is out of my budget. At least her bags last a long time and are something I can get a lot of use out of (I don’t mind if that don’t always match my outfit).
I looked into the discount trains, but I don’t think my personality would do well on a train, plus they don’t save you any time. I found I can take Amtrak for about $100 round trip. I can leave in the early morning, arrive in NYC Penn Station (which is a great hub for the subway) by late morning and then catch a train back that night. That will give be 10-12 hours in NYC and hopefully I can sleep during the train ride, which is about 3.5 hours.
I’ve started a Google Map of places I want to hit up. I need to confirm when/if the Orla store is actually opening. But I’m hoping to hit at least one Anthropologie as well as some more budget-friendly shops like H&M. I’m not actually budgeting a lot of spending money for the trip. It’s going to be more window shopping than anything, but hopefully if my student loan money comes through I will be able to pick up a few things. [This is the annoying thing about being sick, because I had a nice chunk saved and it’s basically all gone to medical bills.]
I’m bringing my mom with me and she wants to visit the World Trade Center memorial, but that requires tickets that I’m not sure are even available. I’m also hoping to meet up with at least one friend for lunch. I’ve got several friends in that area. I haven’t been to NYC since 2007, and I used to go up multiple times a year, so it will be really nice just to be back.
My Off Week
Posted: September 23, 2011 Filed under: About Me, health 2 CommentsFriday I started feeling bad. Worse than normal. Saturday I had to come into “town” to run a few errands, and as soon as I got back I went straight into chilling mode. I was exhausted. Sunday, I was on my way to meet my parents, but went to a walk in clinic instead. Apparently these places vary, and mine is the “treat your exact complaint, but do no further tests or investigation” type, so I got an anti-viral to stop the spread of the sores (you can’t cure them) and that was that. I spent 3 days in bed.
Wednesday morning I finally got in with my regular doctor. She is awesome and knows my deal, so A) she does her job and B) she takes me seriously. They did a pee test which they said came back fine and a CBC blood test that they also said (much later that day) came back fine.
I spent Wednesday at my parents’ house because it is closer to the doctor and closer to my parents (even when they are at work) in case stuff got worse. Plus they have way fewer stairs than me and that was kicking my sick butt. Wednesday evening I made my mom take me to the ER so I could get a full set of tests done and make sure there wasn’t anything seriously wrong with my insides.
The ER did blood tests, the CBC and also stuff that measures how active the Crohn’s is. The doctor sent off for a West Nile Virus test, just in case, since I’d been bitten to death in Maryland recently where there were some cases reported. They told me that there are new guidelines to limit radiation exposure, and as a result they didn’t want to do a CT scan unless they had to, so we did an ultrasound first.
Which I hate. I’ve debated going into details, and if you ever go out drinking with me maybe I’ll tell you, but for now let’s just say I hate this test for a lot of good reasons. If you’ve had the same then you know what I mean and if not then you can remain as blissfully ignorant as I was when I walked into my first one. I got a super nice tech though and that really does help. It’s also cool because she explained things to me as she was taking the pictures, why she kept going back to the same spot, hoping the picture would change…
The picture never changed the way she wanted it to, because it seems like I have inflammation in both the right and left sides of my reproductive system. I’ve had trouble with the left for several years now, but (because my insides have been so hacked up already) my surgeon basically forbade surgery unless it was an actually emergency. So the right side is a new thing. And they mentioned infertility.
[I’m 30. I’m not dating. When I was dating the guy I thought I would marry, we both admitted to not wanting kids. I still don’t want kids. I like kids. I don’t want my own. It’s probably not a great idea to pass on my wonderful genes and by the time I’m in a kid-having situation, it’d be sorta silly to have babies. However, if I ever have a midlife crisis and need kids, I don’t have any hangups about adoption.]
They did find a bladder infection which doesn’t feel like any UTI I’ve ever had. And you’ll remember my doctor said that test came out clean. So I’m on antibiotics now too.
My ultrasound pictures were mailed to my gynecologist and I’m hoping she can call me back and let me know if we need to do something. Or if there is anything that can be done. While I’m not worried about fertility, I do not want to have to be on hormone replacement the rest of my life. I also don’t want stuff left in to get infected and cause me additional pain.
I’m hoping she calls soon and that everything gets figured out.
Stuffed
Posted: August 28, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: clothing, minimalism, organizing, Stuff 2 CommentsThis summer my parents and I have been trying to clear out a lot of our junk. My parents have lived in the same single family home for over 15 years and they have stuff in the attic, the garage has lots of storage, plus every room and closet is full (not Hoarders full, though!).
Luckily I’ve moved several times in the past decade, so each time I have been able to purge some things. In fact, moving all my crap around has directly influenced my habit to NOT buy DVDs, physical CDs, or books. I realized that, even though I’m the type of person who likes to have the TV on, I rarely rewatched even my favorite movies more than a few times. How many current best-sellers do people really re-read? I admit I do read some books more than once, but these are typically childhood classics, not the book you buy at the airport for a long trip. I have tried really hard to just rent, or use Netflix for movies, and use the library, or buy used books and then pass them on.
I still have about two tall bookcases full of books, and nearly 50 DVDs (including box-sets). I’m not a minimalist, but this method has worked to keep the collection aspect under control. I probably bought less than 5 DVDs in the past 3 years.
I’m lucky that I’m not really big on tchotchkes, aka: “dustables.” I guess I had my fill of dusting figurines as a kid. I have a few picture frames around the house, and one bookshelf with a handful of small items (like a small Eiffel Tower from a rare trip to France) that have meaning.
My personal problem is clothes.
I have so many clothes.
Not “this is the shoe closet” levels of craziness, but I easily fill my small walk-in closet, and most of a spare closet. I hang up nearly all clothing, though. But I have probably 40 pairs of socks, over 15 pairs of pants, easily 20 everyday/work dresses, who knows how many t-shirts…
I do purge things. I’m not at the mall every weekend. But I do like clothes, I do tend to buy mid-level nice things (on clearance) that hold up for multiple years, I don’t like to “waste” money buy getting rid of something that is perfectly fine, and my weight tends to fluctuate just enough that a pair of pants may fit one day and be way too big or small two months later.
Typically I get rid of things by donating to Goodwill, or sending a bag to Mom’s work to share with her coworkers and their kids. This happens probably twice a year, but is typically just one bag at a time. Obviously if something is gross I will just throw it out.
What has been helpful for me lately is to consign items that I am tempted to keep “just in case” I need it someday, or might wear it once in the next year. Typically only 50-75% of the items I turn in even get accepted. In that case those rejects go to the Goodwill pile. Sometimes this actually hurts my feelings because I am crazy, but usually it is just because one tiny shop does not really need another pair of black pants. Sometimes it’s because the item is not in as fantastic condition as I’ve deluded myself into believing.
I don’t think of consignment in terms of the money. Last year I made under $100. But this is more than I would get from a yard sale and much easier than eBay. And typically the stuff I’m turning in is from J. Crew, Talbots, or Banana Republic, not Kate Spade or Coach. I don’t buy things just to resell them.
But I’m still stumped. What’s a decent number of things to keep? How many socks does a person need? How do I convince myself that the nice shoes won’t magically stretch to fit without blisters by sitting in my closet for another year? How many pairs of ratty old jeans and t-shirts do I need to keep for painting (I’m not a professional painter)?
I’m not trying to be crazy and only have three outfits, but I want to be reasonable and only have a comfortable low-medium amount of items.
I’d love to hear some feedback from real people!
My Friend the Artist

My best friend from Catholic school is a professional artist. Nicole Bourgea is extremely talented and takes commissions. You can read her blog “I Hate to Alarm You” here or see more of her work at her portfolio site.
I think it would be extremely cool to have her paint my portrait. It’s not really in the budget for me with the family issues and being mid-MBA, but I might ask about her rates and start a fund for a future sitting. If you decide to check it out for yourself, please let me know. I’d love to see the results!
Laughing in the ER
Posted: August 19, 2011 Filed under: About Me, health 5 CommentsToday I was listening to an old Nerdist podcast with Mike Birbiglia. Birbiglia, a comedian, was telling a story about telling jokes about cancer. He was explaining how sometimes it was stressful to tell jokes about such a touchy subject. He went on to explain that often said axiom that a lot of comedians “are people who had to make things funny at home,” had to make uncomfortable situations funny as a way to cope.
This made me think of an experience I’ve had a few times.
Typically when I go to the ER, it’s because I’m in terrible pain and I usually get tests done to see if everything is okay, some pain medication to ease my suffering, and am then sent home and told to follow up with my doctor. That’s what happens when they don’t find anything bad in the tests, obviously.
Nearly every time I go to the ER, my mom goes with me (usually she’s driving). There is a lot of waiting involved in an ER visit, and typically even if you are back in a room, there’s no TV, or nothing good on and it’s just boring. Plus after several hours of being in pain, plus a car trip that can be up to an hour long (I don’t go to my local ER – that’s another story), I can get a little loopy.
So we normally joke around. It helps pass the time, and it helps take the edge off a not fun situation.
I’ve had doctors and/or nurses flat out say that I couldn’t possibly be in that much pain because I was laughing. Like pain means you have to be wailing and gnashing your teeth and writing around on the floor every fricking second? Because I’ve also had an experience when I was in a ton of pain and was told that I needed to be quiet because I was disrupting the other patients in the doctor’s office.
So, I guess it is a no win situation. But I’m not going to stop joking around, or even laughing whenever possible. Because if I’m going to be treated weirdly no matter which way I behave, then I’d rather try my best to make the situation more comfortable for myself.
Delicious Pie
Posted: July 10, 2011 Filed under: Food Leave a commentSome berries I bought at the store last weekend were starting to get a little ripe, so I decided to make a pie.
I used Deb’s pie crust recipe from Smitten Kitchen. It is really easy. If you’ve never made pie crust from scratch and assumed it was hard to do, don’t be scared. Try it.
I used this recipe for the filing, but I split the berries, using 4 cups of blueberries and 2 cups of cut up strawberries (because I didn’t have 6 cups of blueberries).
